VerifyNow® Aspirin Test
The VerifyNow Aspirin Test, the first and only CLIA-waived test to help physicians assess the antiplatelet effect of aspirin. Aspirin binds to the COX-1 enzyme to prevent the conversion of arachidonic acid to thromboxane A2, which results in platelet activation. The VerifyNow Aspirin Test utilizes arachidonic acid as the agonist to measure the antiplatelet effect of aspirin specifically along this pathway. Research shows that patients’ platelet response to aspirin varies,1,2 and up to 1 in 4 patients may not respond adequately to aspirin.3 These patients may be more likely to have a major heart attack or stroke.3
The VerifyNow Aspirin Test is performed by inserting a small tube of blood into a cartridge that has been inserted into the VerifyNow Instrument to measure the change in light transmittance through a patient’s blood sample. Within 10 minutes, the instrument provides an easy-to-interpret result indicating how aspirin is affecting the patient’s platelets and allows the physician to make rapid, informed treatment decisions.
INTENDED USE
The VerifyNow Aspirin Test is a qualitative test to aid in the detection of platelet dysfunction due to aspirin ingestion in citrated whole blood for the point-of-care or laboratory setting. This test is not for use in patients with underlying congenital platelet abnormalities, patients with non-aspirin induced acquired platelet abnormalities or in patients receiving non-aspirin antiplatelet agents (may be used in patients treated with selective COX-2 inhibitors, e.g., celecoxib (Celebrex®)).
