The VerifyNow® IIb/IIIa Assay is a semi-quantitative, whole blood platelet function assay used to
measure glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptor blockade in patients treated with abciximab or eptifibitide.
What is Reported?
The lab report will look similar to the following:
| ************************************************************************************ |
| Result Name | Result | Units | Reference |
| Platelet Function IIb/IIIa (BASE) | 200 | PAU | See Below(1) |
| Platelet Function IIb/IIIa (POST) | 10 | PAU | See Below(2) |
| Percent Inhibition | 95 | % | See Below(2) |
| |
| (1) | Test results are reported in Platelet Aggregation Units (PAU). |
| | 125-330 PAU – Baseline range for patients receiving abciximab. |
| | 136-288 PAU – Baseline range for patients receiving eptifibitide. |
|
| |
| (2) | Post-Drug results are also reported in Platelet Aggregation Units (PAU). |
| | abciximab (ReoPro®) | | eptifibitide (Integrilin®) |
| | 0-44 PAU - > 80% inhibition | | 0-31 PAU - > 80% inhibition |
| | 0-13 PAU - > 95% inhibition | | 0-10 PAU - > 95% inhibition |
|
| ************************************************************************************ |
Platelet Aggregation Units (PAU) indicate the amount of iso-TRAP mediated activation of GP IIb/IIIa receptors
involved in platelet aggregation. PAU is calculated as a function of the rate and extent of platelet aggregation.
Expected values are in the range of 0-330 PAU.
Platelet Inhibition For Interventional Procedures
Prior to or during an interventional procedure, the VerifyNow IIb/IIIa Assay can aid in determining whether adequate
inhibition has been achieved in response to abciximab or eptifibitide. Medical research suggests that there is patient
variability in response to GP IIb/IIIa bolus doses and that MACE is reduced in PCI when a level of > 95% inhibition is
achieved.1 Values less than 13 PAU are reported if post-abciximab dosing is producing
greater than 95% inhibition. Values less than 10 PAU are reported after post-eptifibitide dosing is producing greater
than 95% inhibition.
