Not All Patients Respond Equally
A major concern during and/or after an interventional procedure is an ischemic event, often caused by activated platelets aggregating at the site of injury or stent. Antiplatelet therapy is used to mitigate this risk by reducing platelet reactivity.
However, up to a third of patients may not be responding adequately to their antiplatelet therapy due to several factors:1
• Genetic differences (e.g., CYP2C19)
• Concomitant medications (e.g., proton pump inhibitors)
• Pre-existing conditions (e.g., diabetes, impaired renal function, obesity)
• Non-compliance
Higher Platelet Reactivity Increases Risk of Ischemic Events
Studies have shown that patients who are not responding adequately to their antiplatelet therapy may be at significantly greater risk of MI, stent thrombosis and death.2-5
