Not All Patients Respond Equally

A major concern during and/or after an interventional neuroradiology procedure is an ischemic event. The risk of intracranial hemorrhage associated with antiplatelet therapy is also a concern. Therefore it is critical to understand your patient’s level of platelet response to their antiplatelet medications.

However, up to a third of patients may not be responding adequately to their antiplatelet therapy due to several factors:1
• Genetic differences (e.g., CYP2C19)
• Concomitant medications (e.g., proton pump inhibitors)
• Pre-existing conditions (e.g., diabetes, impaired renal function, obesity)
• Non-compliance

Higher Platelet Reactivity Increases Risk of Ischemic Events

Studies have shown that patients who are not responding adequately to their antiplatelet therapy may be at significantly greater risk of MI, stent thrombosis and death.2-5
